HI we are working for a mining client where in he wants to track the trucks in a open cast mining area where there is no GSM coverage.
could you suggest us the best tracking method , the client says we need to create our own network in that area.

The mining area is in the mid of the forest and there is no chance of creation wifi network. Even for creation of Wifi i need GSM coverage right?
The GSM coverage is there 5 km away from the mining area

As an option you can try to use satellite communication terminals. They don't need GSM network to send data. They can send data using satellites network.

Using VHF network is not possible?
p.s. we can supply VHF transmitter (146 - 174 Mhz, 5w) with GPS and VHF receiver. This work also with Wialon, based on Wialon IPS protocol.

Vas you could use a Xbee mesh network for the communications. Do they want to monitor the complete movement of the trucks or only when that are in certain locations or passing certain points in the site?
You can also talk to the mobile operator regarding the use of a signal extender, could be a FEMTO solution, or to realign their BTS anntenas. We have done this on a number of sites here in Indonesia.

i also would prefer gsm-repeaters.
If you have 5km away a working gsm signal, you just need a tower with a yagi antenna and an good GSM repeater with a directed patch panel antenne.

Use "Off-Line monitoring" system.
In vehicle install "Vehicle black box" GuardMagic mTF4 and necessary additional senosrs.
Download information to monitoring PC by satnadrd USB flash drive.
