Track inside tunnel

Topic: Track inside tunnel

Hi,

Do anybody have experience in using gps trackers which can capture data inside tunnel or where there is no GPS signal.

One of my customer is into excavation and tunnel boring and a couple of trucks, machineries and passenger buses, pick ups etc  spend max 6-12 hours a day inside the tunnel and will come back to the accommodation at the end of the day, and they wish to know the activities happening inside the tunnel like, speed, idling, ion on/off status etc

Regards,
Abraham

Re: Track inside tunnel

Hi Abraham,

use teltonika fm5300, enable the special function (in Wialon) "use server time and location", set the location of the tunnel manualy.
use one of the analog inputs to connect somehow a sensor for speed (from odometer etc), or use canbus if the device has one (i think speed you can also get via standard obd2 port).

ok, what will happen:
Outside the tunnel you have valid GPS and everything works as normal. In that moment when unit drives into the tunnel, it will save the data (if you have no GSM) or transmit it with invalid GPS to Wialon. As you have enabled the special function in Wialon, the server will use the pre-configured location of the tunnel and voila you have all data you need.

If you want to track them INSIDE the tunnel... you need RF-ID bakons every 100m... extremly complicated technical task!

Re: Track inside tunnel

Hi Buwo,

I will try with Teltonika. Meanwhile you know any company selling gyroscope with tracking hardware to plot direction, speed etc inside tunnel. I came across a site a couple of years back and could not recollect who sell it.

Re: Track inside tunnel

Abraham, before the GPS System disabled the SA (selective availability) parameter, expensive navigation systems had connected a gyroscope and speed etc. to get a more correct gps location (because the GPS could be up to 300m wrong).

After SA was disabled the manufactors stoped to use such technologies.

I did some differential gps project as my diploma work and had some contacts to manufactors of such solutions (for example WISI) but they stoped to do such systems.

I know only location services that use active and / or passive RFID Tags to locate persons / mashines in areas without GPS.

I am sure it will be the better / more stable solution of you client require it.

Re: Track inside tunnel

we Implemented in somewhere in Peru, a mine that owners wants to track gold recipients,  was done using Digi RF transceivers in a mesh type network, i think is the same thing here,

Re: Track inside tunnel

For inside a tunnel you need to use a WiFi active tag based system like Areoscout. This works with a standard 2.4 type access points but needs specific software for the location tracking. This will give give good visibility horizontally and vertically. Add strategically placed choke points and the system is very reliable.

This system is used in a number of mines globally so it has references and is mature.

Let me know if you need more information

Re: Track inside tunnel

John, I will check with my customer about the time spend on tunneling projects to understand whether the investment is worth. If they have regular tunneling work it could be worth investing. Shall get back if I need a help.
